Seniority in Congress; why? If every person’s vote counts then every person should be represented by an equal. Yet, in Congress you garner seniority the longer you serve and you get better offices and better committee positions and you get to be the Chairman or the ranking member of a committee based on how long you’ve served.
This isn’t right. Every U.S. citizen deserves equal representation in Congress and if we allow people who have served longer to direct things then there is no equality to representation. Whether it is your first time representing U.S. Citizens or you’ve been elected fifteen times you should have the same authority, access to prime office space, a chance to head a committee or be the ranking member and so on.
There are many things about Congress that need to be changed but the seniority status should be first. No rank among equals should be the standard. A first term Senator should be equal to a fourth termer and a first term Congressperson should be equal to Nancy Pelosi. Offices should be assigned by lottery, and committee positions the same as long as you meet the qualifications for the committee which should be written by an independent group of voters not the reps themselves.
As long as seniority exists in Congress then U.S. citizens are not getting equal representation. Time for change.
